Some questions about Tanning...
How does skin Tan?
When exposed to UV light special cells in your epidermis produce melanin. This is the pigment that turns brown creating your tan. Melanin is created as a protective layer to keep light rays from penetrating deeper into the skin where it could cause damage. It is the body's natural defence against sunburn.
Why do some people tan more than others?
Tanning occurs gradually but it occurs differently for different people. Heredity determines the amount of melanin your skin will produce when Sun Exposure occurs. The more melanin produced the darker your skin will go.
Why does a tan fade?
The top layers of the skin are constantly reproducing and replenishing cells. The tan fades as the cells containing the melanin are removed and renewed. Although from regular tanning the skin will continue to produce more melanin and you will be darker than when you first began tanning.
